A classic Takeout Double would show the values of an opening hand, shortness in Opener’s suit and support for the other three suits. Partner would have a clear picture of the Overcaller’s hand and hopefully be in the position to choose the eight card fit.

That said, after playing in the Sectional last weekend, it was apparent that many players were simply using the Takeout Double to show opening points. The shape of the hand was not taken into consideration.

If this is the case for your partnership, you must indicate your agreement by marking the “Offshape T/O” box on your convention card. (See the yellow highlighted box above.)

Note that the bid is not alertable. The opposition has the right to ask and/or review your convention card. Pairs are not allowed to have “secret” understandings. Everyone gets to know what is going on!
